Daisy Miller Essays - Daisy Miller, Winterbourne,

Daisy Miller Upon Winterbourne's arrival to Vevey, Switzerland, he had been laying on a recreation center seat, bantering with an inquisitive young man when a ?wonderful youngster,? Daisy Miller, drew closer. After a short babble, the two orchestrated a day's excursion to the Castle of Chillon and throughout the following barely any months anticipated gathering again in Italy. All through the story, Winterbourne attempts to descry Miss Miller's character and simultaneously question her notoriety for being a coquettish American young lady in the late nineteenth century. Henry James' acclaimed novelette, Daisy Miller, is an ageless story portraying what results from the resistance of social traditions, disregarding exhortation relating to one's notoriety, lastly standing up to the real world. From her first t?te-?- t?te with Winterbourne and until her last, Miss Miller opposes every social custom appropriate in European culture. During Winterbourne's first prologue to Miss Miller, shockingly, she acknowledges his very striking choice to head out to the Castle without knowing whether he was a good man. Later that equivalent night they met again in the nursery. She approached Winterbourne to take her out for a vessel ride, however in the wake of picking up authorization from her mom, she concluded she would prefer not go if nobody would set up a complain about her accomplishing something so silly. Winterbourne was disregarded to contemplate her impulses and odd type of coquetry. After their splitting, both consented to meet again in Geneva, Italy. When Winterbourne first showed up in Geneva, he got updates on Miss Miller's most recent ventures from his entirely trustworthy auntie. During her stay in Geneva, her man of honor society was made out of ?about six of the standard Roman fortune trackers.? As an American young lady, she remained consistent with her own qualities in spite of the fact that she was in a remote land. Daisy Miller was unconscious of the social structure that relies upon sexual orientation and class mistreatment and she built up a notoriety for herself that would obstruct her associations with upper society. By protecting her American character, the discussion of Miss Miller's coyness and unladylike conduct spread all through Geneva and soon her notoriety had become greater than even she could deal with. One night while Miss Miller was with the organization of Winterbourne and Mrs. Walker, a dear companion, she educated her associates that she would leave presently to meet Giovanni, an Italian fortune tracker and ?personal companion,? for a walk. Winterbourne, realizing his complaint would do nothing but bad, offered to at any rate walk her to her companion so she would not be distant from everyone else so late around evening time. After perceiving that Giovanni was of terrible character, he scrutinized her partner and quickly expressed that he would stay with her for the night. She answered genuinely, ?I have never permitted a courteous fellow to direct to me or meddle with anything I do.? Winterbourne again cautioned her of Giovanni and said that he was not the correct sort of man for her. She paid no notice to his recommendation and immediately joined Giovanni. Now, Mrs. Walker could take no more. She met the gathering in her carriage and asked Miss Miller to get back home with her for purpose of her notoriety. In the wake of saying that she was mature enough to be out around evening time, Mrs. Walker gruffly expressed that Miss Miller was additionally mature enough to be discussed. Alarmed, Miss Miller reacted by saying that, ?if this is inappropriate, than I am all ill-advised and you should surrender me.? With that, Mrs. Walker and Winterbourne left their uninformed companion to her partner Giovanni. Now, Miss Miller's negligence toward her notoriety and her own prosperity cost her the regard of her own companions. The repel Miss Miller got from her companions was a severe shock that made her face the truth of her circumstance. She before long went to her last gathering at Mrs. Walker's home and was left without anyone else. Just because, Winterbourne saw that she was humiliated and embarrassed. Another occurrence happened one pre-fall night when Winterbourne meandered into a Roman Coliseum and amazingly discovered Miss Miller and Giovanni. He begged Miss Miller, not out of graciousness, yet simply for her wellbeing, to get back because of a paranoid fear of getting

Coming of Age in Mississippi Essay

â€Å"No one’s life is a smooth sail; we as a whole come into blustery weather.† This announcement has more truth to it than one may might suspect. Throughout everyday life, everyone arrives at a harsh point, a point where the promising finish to the present course of action appears to be diminish, or even nonexistent. Be that as it may, conquering this misfortune is the thing that manufactures character. Tolerating and beating life’s impediments are what separate solid, autonomous disapproved and ground breaking individuals from the individuals who surrender and maintain a strategic distance from their issues. Anne Moody, creator of Coming of Age in Mississippi, carried on with an existence of incredible battle wherein she defeated misfortune with extraordinary endeavors and a devoted heart and brain. As an African-American female, Anne Moody had perhaps the hardest fight to battle for a mind-blowing duration. With restricted rights as a lady and much further constraints because of race, she frequently wound up being subjected by others. While in secondary school, she left her old neighborhood of Centreville, Mississippi to spend the mid year in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. While there, she worked for a neighborhood lady, Mrs. Jetson, doing housework. In the wake of working for Mrs. Jetson for about fourteen days, Anne wished to gather her compensation. At the point when Anne discovered Mrs. Jetson’s house vacant, she reviewed â€Å"On Monday I called the shoe store, and was told Mrs. Jetson had stopped on Friday. I had at no other time felt so gypped in for my entire life. Out of the considerable number of ladies I had worked for this lady was the worst† (Moody 150). Anne had been cheated out of two weeks’ worth of pay. She was shocked at Mrs. Jetson’s boldness in neglecting to pay Anne what was legitimately hers. It was hard to secure positions where she was treated with some pride, and practically difficult to track down ones where she was treated as her employer’s equivalent. Anne had to change employments every now and again by virtue of being disregarded and utilized. Albeit no misleading experience was as effective on Anne as the one with Mrs. Jetson, Anne experienced comparative circumstances in employments she had earlier and occupations she took a while later. The mid year in the wake of being in Baton Rouge, Anne returned to Louisiana; this time she remained in New Orleans. There, she figured out how to get an occupation in a chicken processing plant. What she expected to be an enormous, mind boggling, and to some degree clear working environment ended up being a horrible bad dream. To her stun, she wound up gutting newly killed chickens for more than ten hours a dayâ without gloves or legitimate sanitation at all. Close to the furthest limit of the day, Anne remembered her â€Å"face, arms, and garments were splattered with blood and chicken poop. I got so nauseated at one point that I remained there and let around twelve chickens half brimming with poo pass me by† (Moody 178). Alongside the other assembly line laborers, Anne is treated with the most extreme negligence to respect and sanitation. She is compelled to work unbearably extended periods for the lowest pay permitted by law, presented to odd dead creatures and helpless to illness. Shockingly, on the grounds that the compensation was superior to most different occupations in the territory, Anne had to stay with her production line work. She worked in the production line for a month, setting aside her cash and picking up introduction to the different stations in the manufacturing plant. In spite of the fact that she made generally excellent cash considering the present situation, she was profoundly influenced by her work; for quite a long time she was unable to eat chicken and for a mind-blowing remainder she wouldn't eat boxed chicken. The test of going to work each early daytime comprehending what she would suffer was intense, however her determination and requirement for cash helped her push through. After secondary school, Anne applied to and went to Natchez College in Mississippi. During her subsequent year, she was eating in the cafeteria nearby when she and a couple of different cohorts discovered slimy parasites in their food. Sickened, she and her cohorts raged into the kitchen to discover a clarification for the loathsome experience. She â€Å"knew precisely where the corn meal were kept from the time I had worked in the kitchen. I went directly to the storeroom and saw that there was a major break from the showers upstairs. The water was leaking directly down onto the shelves† (Moody 256). Anne and her schoolmates boycotted the grounds cafeteria and its food, declining to yield until some sterile fixes were executed. The test here was finding different approaches to remain took care of. The understudies needed more cash to last them over a week or something like that, so inevitably they all began back, individually, to the cafeteria and its semi-clean food. Still repelled, Anne would not return and started losing a great deal of weight. She turned out to be so dainty and hungry all the time that she depended on keeping in touch with her mom who carried her enough canned food to last the rest of the semester. The test in staying took care of with sound, sterile food was one which introduced itself for a huge scope for Anne at school and something else. Had she been not able to acquire food fromâ her family, she may have kept direct from blacking out or even demise. Defeating this test was just about an immeasurably significant issue for Anne. One of Anne’s most noticeable recollections and encounters in her initial life was during her school profession when she took an interest in a protest in Woolworth. The possibility of the demonstration was to sit tranquilly at a white lunch counter and request administration; along these lines, blacks needed to demonstrate they wished to be dealt with similarly. Obviously, doing something like this attracted a ton of consideration next to no time, and not long after the demonstration started a huge group framed in the café. After the horde of whites acknowledged Anne and her individual demonstration members would not move until they got administration, â€Å"the crowd began spreading us [sit-in participants] with ketchup, mustard, sugar, pies, and everything on the counter. Before long Joan and I were joined by John Salter, yet the second he plunked down he was hit on the jaw with what had all the earmarks of being knuckle reinforcements. Blood spouted from his face and somebody tossed salt beyond any confining influence wound† (Moody 291). The viciousness that happened at the protest that Anne and her companions needed to suffer is practically incredible. The outright lack of regard, debasement, and savagery appeared to blacks by whites is basically incredible, yet Anne was confronted with difficulties like these consistently. Incredibly, Anne was gutsy, astute, and controlled enough not to retaliate and to stay peaceful regardless of what viciousness was appeared to her. Her capacity to not battle fire with fire is astounding, and helped her to defeat the misfortune which she so frequently wound up confronting.

Surface and Interface States of Ga Compound Research Paper

Surface and Interface States of Ga Compound - Research Paper Example The paper talks about different issues identified with the gallium compound semiconductors including both the interface and the surface properties. It examines the development of the surface state and the charges at the interface state when interfaced with different metals. Foundation Surface state: Intrinsic and extraneous An extensive number of clean semiconductor surfaces give indications of both natural and outward surface states. Surface conditions of materials can be characterized as the electronic states that are found at the material’s surface. Surface states are shaped because of the sharp change from strong materials that ends with the surface. Surface states are normally discovered near the surface in the nuclear layer. The progressions of the electronic band structure to vacuum from the mass materials are brought about by the surface material end. After the end of the surface material, a debilitated potential is made at the surface which prompts the arrangement of new electronic states know as the surface state [3]. The groups of the strong on the outside of semiconductor precious stones get identified with vacuum vitality since it takes a lot of vitality to expel the electrons from the gem to the vacuum. This because of the way that the arrangement of gem from far independent molecules bring down the vitality henceforth the high measure of vitality associated with the electron expulsion. The synthetic securities at the outside of the precious stone have their occasional example hindered at the surface which thus results into unsaturated securities [1]. After the interference, the unsaturated securities at that point rework themselves through surface reproduction which might be immersed by a layer of particles. The re-plan of the immersed bonds brings about changes in both the permitted energies and the surface precious stone structure. The development of surface states can be best portrayed by Bloch’s Theorem which permits the wave ve ctor capacity to be a mind boggling number. On a basic level, a nonexistent wave vector relates to a damped wave work which is exponential in nature. In flawless limited non physical gem that doesn't encounter periodicity infringement and encounters a translational balanced break permitting wave vector with nonzero nonexistent segments [6]. With the conditions satisfied, it can along these lines be demonstrated that the subsequent states are confined at the surface. The energies of the shaped states are situated at the surface which frames a different band of surface states. The quantity of molecules per territory at the outside of a gem significantly decides the quantity of surface states per zone of the precious stone. The quantity of states can anyway be undermined of states in the gem without limit would have added to the conduction groups or the valence groups [5]. On account of characteristic semiconductors, the quantity of filled surface states is proportionate to the quantit y of electrons expelled from the mass valence band because of the adjustment in nonpartisanship. The filled surface states are viewed as contributor like states given that they have electrons that can be given to the void accessible states. Void surfaces states then again can be considered as acceptor like given that they have void accessible surface states which can be involved by electrons [3]. Inborn surface states Intrinsic surface

Hydrophonics: An Agricultural Advancements

From cloned creatures to herbicide-safe seed, science-based innovations have never affected horticulture than they are today and will probably keep on having later on. The mechanical headways in horticulture somewhere in the range of 1960 and 1990 are regularly alluded to as the Green Revolution. These advancements incorporated the turn of events and commercialization of high return seeds, the expanded utilization of substance pesticides and herbicides, and the boundless utilization of present day manures and water system procedures. Soil Science is the characteristic asset science dedicated to the meager layer of the world's lithosphere (outside layer) answerable for supporting life. Soil Science incorporates the essential natural, substance topographical and physical qualities of the dirts of the world, just as the administration of soils to create food and ensure the earth. Hydroponics from the Latin ‘water working', is essentially developing plants without soil. Hydroponics is as old as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Today this innovation is broadly used to develop rich, solid indoor plants and premium level vegetables, foods grown from the ground. The physiological prerequisites of plants can be met without the utilization of soil or regular daylight. Plants are established (and in this way bolstered) in an idle medium and nourishment is given by water solvent mineral components. The corn borer is destroying for the rancher, costing cultivators more than $1 billion yearly in the United States. Bt represents Bacillus thuringiensis, which is a normally happening soil creature. Bacillus thuringiensis produces an amazing poison protein that executes the European corn borer when ingested. In light of this recognition, specialists changed the Bt quality that creates the protein in the life form. At that point, they embedded the adjusted quality into corn germplasm. Researchers can even pick which part of the corn plant they need to show the Bt attribute: in green tissue and dust, or even corn leaves, sheath, tail, ear shank, portions and silks. Subsequently, the Bt quality upgraded corn germplasm can murder the corn borer similarly as the Bacillus thuringiensis living being can.

political ideology in the media Essay -- essays research papers

All through numerous ages and years gone bye the media and introduction of issues by news sources have impacted society’s suppositions on good and legislative issues. Going back to the composition of the constitution the overall population was impacted by information disclosed in the media introduction. The designers of the American Constitution restricted paper correspondents from hearing any data with respect to the sacred gatherings because of the way that our establishing fathers would not like to be affected by the manner in which the news was accounted for. In today’s innovative society this compelling idea might be much increasingly common with the headway of the web and the simple open news. So as to be educated you no longer need to take care of a tab to buy in to your nearby paper, however you can essentially tap on a story on a site and read a similar book that shows up in neighborhood papers. Two sources which are both effectively available and very much reg arded are the New York Times and the Washington Times. The two papers report on both national and neighborhood news relating to all regions that regarded being secured. After assessing the belief system, predisposition, announcing style, and simplicity of learning new data, I found these two very much regarded and notable papers to be immensely extraordinary.      Upon endeavoring to explore around the two sites I found that finding stories and explicit works on the NY Times site was harder than on the Washington Times site. The NY Times ...

Construction

Construction *Ahem*. When I applied to MIT, I put down on my application that my probable choice of major (or however it is they ask you what it is you want to do) was mechanical engineering. I liked to build things and create things, and I thought that led me to being a mechanical engineer. Fast forward a year, and Ive had some new thoughts on the matter. Ive always enjoyed making things; that hasnt changed at all. This summer, for example, I built a bike. Working at MITERS, one of MITs student groups which I believe Ive mentioned before (and will someday blog about), I decided that I wanted to have a bike for when I came to campus in the fall. I didnt want to bring the nice bicycle I had at home, which my grandparents had given me my freshman year of high school; everybody had told me that living in the city, youd have a bike stolen at least once if you were lucky. However, I didnt want a piece-of-trash bike with a rusty chain and a metal post for a seat (ouch). I wanted something nice, something snazzy, something that I would still enjoy. I didnt want to spend a ton of money, so I set about trying to acquire something meeting all those criteria, on the cheap. Yeah, Im picky. One day this summer, the very-much-publicized Charles Guan sends out the following e-mail: 3 bikes in mostly good repair on the loading dock. also, someones nuclear apocalypse survival kit complete with soviet literature and yellow bunny suit. but i already claimed that. get the rest y/n -c Score! A few e-mails later, and Charles snagged one of the bikes for me. That afternoon, I came by to check it out: an older, Ross-brand single speed bike, with a kickin retro seat and a basket on back. I liked it, but wanted to touch it up. I began by stripping the paint, painting it blue, and failing at putting it back together again: (I couldve sworn there were more parts in the front fork Gremlins mustve taken them.) Oh. Also, I soon came to the (aided) realization that I had a womens frame. With my masculinity feeling threatened (and the frame being too small for me), I set about acquiring a different (but used, cheap) frame. Fast forward a medium amount of money, a lot of time digging around a *bike graveyard* and in the bike store, and I had most of a bike. I ended up with a maroon frame, sweet plain handlebars, the old seat, and a really nice 3-speed gearbox. Because I was building the bike, and because it sounded like a really cool idea, I didnt want lots of sprockets and tensioners and shifters; I opted to buy a wheel with a planetary gearbox in the wheel hub, which gave me three speeds with no shifting roller chain. (Fyi, three has proven more than enough for the city) Some elbow grease, some bearing grease, and some pizza grease (from Chicago Pizza) later, I had a bike. Wewt. (Note: I know that when I talk about this as building a bike, it really means that I just assembled a bike from mostly junked but already-existing bike parts. Nothing too impressive; however, there are some people at MIT whove actually designed and built bicycles from scratch, and thats pretty cool). Where am I going with this? Hang on, Im almost done. This semester, after finishing my critically acclaimed (what does that even mean?) fork, I decided in my freshman seminar that I wanted to build a steel table. It took three+ weeks of forging (working a few hours a week), which make for a fairly boring story, so Ill only share the end result with one awesome detail: when I finished making the table, from 18 feet of steel rod, we put a piece of sheet steel on it as a test surface. Instructor and general cool-dude Mike Tarkanian took out his iPod Touch, and took me by surprisre: he bought an app, on the spot, that would use the iPods built-in accelerometer as a surface level for the table. As much as I am *not* an Apple fan, I thought that was pretty awesome. Also awesome was that, through eyeballing my handiwork, I had built the table to within 1.3 degrees of level (referenced to the floor). Woot! Anyway, here it is; the picture was taken in a bathroom because I wasnt sure where I could find a nice backdrop for a test shot. Also, the glass top is borrowed; I havent bought one of my own, yet. Anyway, what does this all come down to? The reason I enjoyed building this table, the reason I enjoyed building my bicycle, and the reason I enjoy using linux not Ubuntu-everything works and looks shiny!-linux, but darn, I have to compile drivers again, this sucks-linux is the reason I thought I wanted to be a mechanical engineer. I do like building things, but I like building them because I want to be a part of the creation process, I want to understand and have some part in the things around me. I like customizing things, I like doing things the hard way, and I like taking things apart even when I cant put them back together; I like all this because I like to create. I dont know yet if that means creating things in the mechanical realm, as a choice of course 2 for my major would suggest, or in other fields perhaps algorithms? but I do know that I like to take the hard way, often for less effective results (the chain fell off my bike while I was riding it, a while back, putting me on crutches _), and I know it is that quality that will lead me to whatever major I do choose to pursue here at MIT. In a less overarching sense, though, that has some consequences for the present: During my first few weeks at MIT, both of the (old) laptops I had brought to campus broke (A three-year-old Compaq Id bought in high school, and a $140 tablet Id snagged on ebay at the start of the summer). Although Ive been getting by on a netbook since, an Eee PC does not make for a good primary computer. Time to get building! Till next time, -Cam [Sneak preview: Next week may be some of my thoughts about the college essay, although those thoughts do not reflect any opinions of the MIT admissions office (blah, blah, blah). This is for you, regular-action procrastinators!] [Of course, it may not be, if I decide to write about something else. I change my mind often.]

The Minimum Wage is Bad - Free Essay Example

The Minimum Wage is Bad The state of Arkansas this past November on the voting ballot was the choice for citizens to vote for the raising of the minimum wage to $11.00/hr over the next three years. At first glance, someone might think that this is a rewarding change but when taking a deeper look into the subject, it will reveal a lot of consequences that will cause a lot of trouble over time. Cost of living is going to rise, businesses will be less likely to hire when needed, unemployment numbers will rise and simple things such as a hamburger at McDonalds will go up.. Currently the minimum wage in the southern United States averages around $8.00/hr.(LaborLawCenter) This is the reason housing is so much cheaper in the south than living in California where the minimum wage is $12.00 or New York where it is $11.00. Now imagine this, Arkansas having the same minimum wage as New York. There are four major entities that affect cost of living; housing, taxes, healthcare, food. The average rent for a 1,000 sq.ft. apartment is roughly $3500 where the same size apartment will run you around $800 in Arkansas (RentCafe.com). Housing cost 379% more in New York when compared to Arkansas. Health insurance rates will skyrocket as well. The average health insurance for Arkansas is right around $2800 (Valuepenguin.com) with New York coming in over double the price with at $6800.(Empirecenter.org) When businesses raise a minimum wage, theyre also having to give raises to the employees who make more than minimum wage. Who wants to go to a four-year school, spend thousands of dollars for classes and then come out making $15/hr for a nursing job when they could go flip burgers at the local burger joint for $11 and not be liable for someones life? When employees get raises, then the cost of goods rise as well affecting the overall cost of living. Along with cost of living going up, there will be a rise in the unemployment rate as well. It is simple economics when it comes to this aspect of raising the minimum wage. Non-skilled labor jobs are easy to come by. An employer will pay X amount to this position. When the wage gets over that threshold, the employer will be less likely to hire for this position. What this equals is that position going away altogether, instead of being paid a lower wage. Now that job along with the services it provided are gone. Economist Richard Vedder quotes If the price of something rises, people buy less of it including labor. Thus governmental interferences such as minimum-wage laws lower the quantity of labor demanded. What he is saying is basically clarifying what is written above. On February 2017, Wendys CEO Bob Wright states there is a 4% increase in wages across the board in his company. First, they could cut margins, but with an 8% margin, thats unlikely. The second option is to raise prices. Given how price-sensitive consumers are these days, that too is a non-starter. Finally, the firm could reduce the amount of labor they use and thats exactly what they did. Wendys eliminated 31 hours of labor per location, per week.(businessinsider.com) Now, the whole purpose of raising the minimum wage was really aimed at this market of employees which are the non-skilled jobs. Well, now that they have cut hours but the business is open so what now. Wendys CIO David Trimm states they will be installing automated ordering kiosk into 16% of their stores by the end of 2017 and their machines would pay off in a two year time frame because of the savings by reducing wages. Wendys is not the only one going to the automated route. McDonalds is going the automated route also specifically in the New York and Seattle Markets.(businessinsider.com) Why those markets? Because they have some of the highest minimum wages in the nation. As long as states continue to raise minimum wage, these low skilled jobs will be killed off. In a survey of 1,213 businesses and human resources professionals, 38% of employers who currently pay minimum wage said they would lay off some employees if the minimum wage was raised to $10.10.(https://minimum-wage.procon.org) Thats not even $11.00 an hour or an even higher wage as some think it should be. Taking an educated guess, that number would be pushing 50% at $11.00. If there is a company ten employees making minimum wage at $10.10, that is $404 a week. Going up to $11 would mean an additional $36 a week. Given that employee is full time and works a full forty hour work week. They would make an additional $1,872 a year for one employee. Now the company has ten employees, that is a humongous increase of nearly $19,000. Depending on the business, that could be the entire budget for the year. Now that company is having to layoff to afford to pay rent, utilities, and insurance on their building. For a small business paying ten high school kids $8.50/hr for 17 hours a week. That is $1,445 per week and $75,140 for the year. With the increase to $11/hr that yearly figure now goes up a whopping $22,100 for the year. The employer is going to cut hours and/or employees to get that cost back down to a manageable figure. Minimum wage jobs are aimed at students and young adults that are making money while furthering their education. 50.4% of all minimum wage jobs are held by kids and young adults aging from 16 24. Most employers are going to be less likely to hire a 16 year old high school student for $11/hr that they deem worthy of $8.50/hr. There is a catch phrase used commonly when talking about minimum wage and that is you cant raise a family on minimum wage Minimum wage is not designed to raise a family on. It was created in 1938 by President Roosevelt and was intended to deliver fair labor standards throughout the country(historynewsnetwork.org) The unemployment rate for ages 16-19 is roughly 20%, increasing the minimum wage is only going to make this number go up. A lot lower than other age groups proving that a high minimum wage is causing employers to not hire unskilled workers. In 2009 whe n Chicago raised their minimum wage, there was a 9% spike in teenage unemployment in three months. According to a study by Thomas A. Mroz, PhD, and Timothy H. Savage, PhD, for the Employment Policies Institute, those experiencing unemployment at an early age have years of lower earnings and an increased likelihood of unemployment ahead of them. Teenagers and young adults need jobs at their age to teach them life values like going to work when you really do not want to, getting along with co-workers when times are rough and the feeling of accomplishment of finishing a project or goal at a job. Without these, there would be a lot more unemployed teenagers which is only going to lead to higher crime rates and more unemployed adults. The last example of why a higher minimum wage is bad is the cost of goods will increase. Other than automation which was discussed earlier the establishment is going to pass the rising labor cost onto the consumer at a 100%. Higher wages in hotels are going to cause an increase in guest rooms and meeting rooms. A simple cup of coffee in Oakland, CA rose 10-20% when the rate was increased to $12.25. When the minimum wage was raised to $10 in Chicago, a cup of coffee jumped 6.7% (NBCNews.com). Hamburgers are either going to increase in price or the size of the patty is going to decrease to help offset the labor cost. In closing, there have been several examples discussed of why raising the minimum wage is not a great idea. It is not designed to live on nor provide for the family. It will only make the the low income individuals fall into poverty level income. It will push employers to either lay off workers or close up business completely. Teenagers are less likely to find work which will lead to higher dropout rates of school, higher crime rates and even more of a percentage of citizens unemployed and living in poverty followed by the skyrocketing of the cost of living in general. The minimum wage should be used as a floor of wages and utilized as a stepping stone in the workforce and not a way of living forever. Work Cited 2019 Minimum Wage Rates by State.
